What to do before getting a tattoo?

Written by Paulina Hladkiewicz & Sinéad Kennard

Getting your first tattoo, or any for that matter, is an exciting decision…

So, it’s important you have all the facts. Especially how to prepare in order to make informed decisions. Here are five things you MUST DO:

1. Take your time

Give yourself time to research and think about design, placement, artist and potential meaning or aesthetic of your tattoo. A rushed tattoo is more likely to be one you regret.

2. Think of the future

Avoid selecting a design solely based on current trends. Make sure your tattoo holds personal significance.  Perhaps choose a look you love, so you’re happy with it for years to come.

3. Research is key

Don’t skimp on research when it comes to finding a reputable tattoo artist and studio. Above all, look for reviews, ask for recommendations, and inspect the artist’s portfolio to ensure they have the style and skill you desire. Hygiene and safety standards are paramount.

4. Anticipate pain and aftercare

Tattoos can be painful, and the healing process can be uncomfortable. Don’t underestimate the pain, and be prepared for some level of discomfort during and after the tattooing process. Also, follow the aftercare instructions provided by your tattoo artist to ensure proper healing and minimize the risk of infection.

5. Cost matters

Tattoos can be expensive, and it’s not an area where you want to cut corners. Be prepared to invest in a quality tattoo, as going for a cheaper option can lead to regrettable results. Remember, a good tattoo is a long-term investment.

Ultimately, getting a tattoo is a personal decision, and it’s crucial to approach it with thoughtfulness and care to ensure that you’ll be satisfied with the results for years to come.
